Urban areas are experiencing unprecedented growth and it is estimated that – within 50 years – more than two thirds of the world’s population will live in urban areas. Growing cities mean better life chances and economic opportunities, but are also characterized by extreme differences in income and living conditions with an estimated 70% of the urban population in the least developed countries living in slums. This urbanization trend is especially apparent in developing countries or countries in rapid transition in Africa and Asia.

This accelerating and large-scale urbanization in developing countries is a key issue in the fight against poverty and brings a pressing need for a broad strategy for urban management, including urban planning and environmental system solutions. How can urban planning actions meet the need for good living conditions with proper shelter, water, sanitation and waste management, as well as transport infrastructure and social services? What are the contributions from architects and urban planners and how could the experience from our part of the world be transferred?
